” Un-Christlike Christianity”

“Un-Christlike Christianity”

I was preparing my sermon for this weekend and was overcome by a very troubling characteristic that we see in modern-day Christendom. That thing that troubled me is the fact that so many of us “Christians” are so “Un-Christlike!” I mean, those of us that are married, we talk to our spouse, we live with our spouse, we fellowship with our spouse, and for the most part, we live a married life. In my home state, if you’re a University of Tennessee fan, you wouldn’t be caught dead in a Alabama Crimson Tide Shirt or hat. Why is that? You’re a GBO Fan, aka-“Go Big Orange.”
The verse that really rattled me is a verse of prophetic portion just before the ascension of Christ found in Acts 1:8–“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” This prophecy absolutely came true. Fact is, we see it unfold in the very next chapter when the believers were filled at Pentecost! All believers and followers of Christ were filled with the Holy Ghost and empowered from that day forward. Those believers from that day forward began the World-wide campaign of spreading the Gospel to the ends of the World, and that Campaign still exists today. The greatest power that any of us have as Christians is the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit!
The agitating thorn in my side on this verse was that lil verb, “shall.” “Ye shall receive power after the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me.” Jesus gave a prophetic Word concerning the Holy Ghost and we see that come to pass. But the next prophetic word He gave was concerning what we will or SHALL do once we become Spirit Filled Believers!
Jesus said, we SHALL be witnesses to Him in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the World! If Christ’ prophetic Word came true about the Holy Ghost coming to indwell and empower believers, then what can we say about our “Christian” lives not witnessing to our friends, family, community(Jerusalem), country (Judea), and world? We all can certainly be witnesses to our everyday circles, but how can we extend beyond that without being an active missionary? Well, there are many that have and continue to go before us to plant churches, serve the foreign lands, and pave the way for others to hear the Gospel!

We’re never more Christ-like than when we’re sharing the Good-news that God Loves the World and has provided a way of salvation through the Son, Christ Jesus! If we’re not sharing that good news and supporting the Great Commission Work, I find it hard to believe that the Holy Spirit is in us! If the Holy Spirit is within us, Jesus said we Shall be witnesses. Christians share Christ, we are commissioned to Go and tell others. To say that you can’t, is to deny the power of the Holy Ghost or even worse, to deny the existence of the Holy Ghost within you! We can only be Christ-like if we are indeed a Christian! Be a Spirit Filled Witness to and of the Lord Jesus Christ!
